Pedagogy Workshops
The faculty in our department are committed to always improving their teaching. In addition to attending university workshops and taking advantage of the resources of the Faculty Center, we have started a tradition of monthly “pedagogy luncheons” that are open to all of our grad students, full time faculty and adjunct instructors. At these monthly discussions we share best practices learned from college workshops; study books that focus on methods that proven to be effective in the classroom; and share creative assignments that promote experiential learning and high levels of critical thinking.
Upcoming Workshops
November 21
October 31
This Halloween, join us for our second discussion on Jason Bahr’s Deep in Thought at 11:00 am in the CAL Conference Room. We will be reviewing the specific virtues listed in Chapter 2 (see attached file) and then we will spend time acknowledging the ways we already incorporate these virtues in our current pedagogy. We will also brainstorm and discuss ideas of how we can further incorporate these virtues in our classroom and assignments in small but meaningful ways. Our discussion will give us all some practical applications of how we can use this content to help illuminate student experience in our own courses and at the University.
Lunch will be from Aubergine Kitchen. We hope you can join us!
October 3
Join us for a discussion on the Introduction and Chapter 1 of Jason Baehr’s Deep in Thought: A Practical Guide to Teaching for Intellectual Virtues. Baehr’s work explores how cultivating intellectual virtues—like curiosity, open-mindedness, and intellectual courage—can enrich classroom experiences and lead to deeper, more engaged learning that goes beyond acquiring marketable skills. In this session, we’ll explore his approach and brainstorm practical strategies for integrating these virtues into our classrooms to help students better understand the value of education.
The book is available electronically through HBLL: https://lib.byu.edu/search/byu/record/cat.7587328.item.7587328-1001?holding=075l0k0dvqt4f940. PDFs of the two selections for discussion are attached.
